Great Results!

Results, results, results....the results are in! Two years ago I was 100lbs overweight with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and depressed with my condition. I was on 7 different medications to treat the above symptoms. That's typically what medications do, treat the symptoms not the cause. Good for the short term to buy you enough time to get to the root of the problem and work on the long term fix.

Well, I got the results of my latest blood work. Normal levels for cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides! My blood pressure is within normal range and I am no longer depressed. Best of all, I have gone from 7 different daily prescriptions to 1 prescription medication!

I have also lost half of the weight I want to lose in the process, 50lbs! All this in less than 2 years at 52 years old! Thanks to God, doctors, friends and Internet research sources I have been able to put together a regime of healthy practices that together make up a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle comprised of a balanced, age and ability appropriate daily exercise program, a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, good grains, good sources of lean protein, plenty of Omega three rich foods, my daily shakes and water, water, water and appropriate rest, prayer and meditation.

Also, as a side bar, because I have and am losing the weight slowly (1-2lbs a week), I have no stretch marks or loose skin. My complexion is better and I actually feel and look like I have gone back 10 years in age over the last two years.

Real Food For Life

Back to the tittle of this blog. Real Food, not synthetic vitamins or supplements, not genetically engineered foods, not foods processed to the point where all nutrients are removed, not foods grown outside of certified organic practices, not foods cooked to the point of the release of all nutritional value. This over processed, over cooked, nutritionally stripped food is going into our bodies! Junk in junk out! These processes not only kill harmful bacteria but they kill the very "life force" in the food.

Which brings me to the second part of my phrase, For Life. Life begets life! In order for our food to support our bodies and health the way God designed is to eat it the way it was given to us by our Creator. Alive! With all of it's nutrition intact. Fruits, Vegetables, Seeds, Nuts, Sprouts, eaten as raw as possible and for me lean sources of protein like free range kosher chicken and fresh fish baked, grilled or steamed.
Gen 1:29
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.
Gen 9:3
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.

I am not against scientific progress, in fact I am very much for it, but it is true that some things are better left alone. Our efforts to produce more food at less cost is causing our food supply to be weakened. Let's support farmers and producers to farm organically and research how to distribute the food more efficiently. Our farmers destroy crops and stop using land to balance supply and demand for economic reasons. Let's spend time figuring how to compensate them for producing great quality instead of great quantity and then find a way to get the food to those in need.

Most sports nutrition professionals discourage using supplements, favoring real food instead. Kris Clark, Ph.D., R.D., Sports Nutrition Director at Penn State University, says, "I rely on the major nutrients in food, timing of meals and fluids to enhance athletic performance, and in general I discourage dietary supplements, other than the use of sport shakes, bars and gels after practice or events for muscle cell recovery."

Carmen Castanada Sceppa, M.D., Ph.D., a scientist working at the Jean Mayer USDA/Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University School of Medicine, says, "Amino acid supplements are not digested and absorbed in the body as readily as amino acids coming from food sources. Moreover, amino acid supplements tend to cause an imbalance of the amino acids already present in the body."

The conclusion of a study at Vanderbilt University of product claims on amino acid supplements concluded, "... the supplements are most likely not to be effective and not worth the risk." "Creatine is one of the most popular supplements, with over 100 studies consistently showing it can work in muscle cell recovery in athletes who engage in high-intensity, short-burst activity such as sprinting or weight lifting," says Clark. "But it does not work for endurance or recreational athletics."

Because the supplements have no caloric value, weight gain from their use is not at issue. What is at issue is the delusion, often sold right on the packaging, that muscular, lean, ripped physiques can happen only as a result of taking them.

There is a direct link between exercise, diet and metabolism. Loss of muscle through a more sedentary life, while maintaining the same caloric intake, generally leads to weight gain.

URI International seeks to address some of these issues! URI International understands that a perfect drying process is the key to maintaining the nutritional integrity of the fresh whole foods being dried. Unlike typical drying processes used in the nutritional supplement industry, the proprietary URI International InstaFresh Drying Process helps to maintain, rather than compromise, the naturally occurring nutritional content in whole foods. Our unique and proprietary process preserves the nutritional integrity and life force of the fresh produce being dried, which is essential to health and well being.

Our InstaFresh Low Temperature Drying Process takes newly harvested, fresh-pressed 34°F liquid juice to powder within 30 seconds. During this process, the product temperature averages 65°F and never exceeds 100°F, which is considered phenomenal in the drying industry. All of this is accomplished within hours of harvest! We understand that the moment you separate any fruit or vegetable from its root or vine, the natural nutrients in the food begin to die. The short period of time between harvest and locking the natural life force into a powder form is one of the critical reasons why URI International’s live whole food products are the most nutritionally dense in the industry today!

This proprietary process ensures that the whole foods found in URI Products retains naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, ORAC value, live enzymes, antioxidants, amino acids, phytonutrients, co-factors, synergistic compounds and natural balance intact – just as Nature intended! Even the flavor and aroma are preserved. All of this is achieved without pasteurization or the use of any preservatives. The dried ingredients are then blended, packaged and labeled in our own facilities and shipped directly to you! The resulting products provide nutrient dense, whole food powders that are easily broken down, dispersed, digested and assimilated by your body.

The URI drying facilities are located within a pristine mountain valley in Southern Utah surrounded by 4,700 acres of certified organic farmland where many of our whole food ingredients are grown.

This fertile land began as a ancient lake bed, layered with deep soil created and kept rich by the ash and weathering of ancient volcanoes, mountain runoff and organic matter. This fertile farmland provides some of the most nutrient rich soil on earth; abundant in selenium, precious metals, friendly organisms, fulvic acid, rare earth and vital plant micronutrients necessary for optimal plant growth. These conditions, combined with the regions elevation, sunshine, clean air, low humidity, proper crop rotation and continued re-mineralization from the surrounding snow capped mountains produce nutrient dense, organic crops.

Each crop is nurtured and harvested at the peak of nutrition, taken to our onsite processing facilities, where it is juiced and dried to preserve the nutritional integrity of the plant, to produce 100% pure, nutrient rich unpasteurized juice powder. By cutting out the middleman, URI is fully integrated, and provides whole food ingredients, processing, packaging and labeling direct to you. Fresh produce from field to you.

URI International maintains its product superiority through ongoing research and scientific developments to ensure that our products, ingredients and drying process remain the best in the industry. I have been drinking The Feast, Beyond Berries, and Barley Green for 6 months now and have never had better results from a nutritional supplement before. My wife and 4 daughters agree that these products offer the best quality whole food supplement that is tasty and affordable for everyone! Try some today. You'll be glad you did!

Common Sense Diet and Exercise

Here's the bad news. There is no magic pill, diet, exercise, machine, operation or any other thing that by itself will maintain proper weight and optimal health! That is the best and most informative piece of information I can give you. We keep waiting for that one magic thing that will relieve our need to manage and steward our lifestyle and health. There is NO MAGIC. Say it with me, there is NO MAGIC!

The Bible states it this way in Gal.6:7-9, 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

While I am taking that scripture out of it's original context which is in relation to giving it is also appropriate when speaking about health, diet and exercise. Look at it again, don't be deceived....think about it....how many pills, devices, memberships and video/dvds have you bought? And why did you buy them? And do ANY of them work effortlessly and without any work or sacrifice on your part? Most don't even work at all!

Whatever one sows, that will he also reap. I believe that all truth is universal truth and works in all areas of our life. Jesus said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free." Again, taken out of context but still applicable here. You must sow into, or invest, in your health. You must invest time, discipline and even money. Sometimes it is more expensive to get quality produce but it is so worth it! It is always a pain to get up early to exercise but it is so worth it.

We can't have a short term approach to a long term challenge! Health is a lifelong pursuit and must be addressed as such. We will reap if we faint not! Make a comprehensive plan that fits your lifestyle and work the plan. A plan that you can live with. For life!! A plan that encompasses proper Rest, Hydration, Diet, Exercise, Avoidance of unhealthy practices like smoking and drinking in excess, Forgiveness and a Healthy Self Image.

Now the Good News! There are many great programs and plans out there that when properly integrated into your lifestyle will produce the best result possible. Remember, your plan must be comprehensive and have both short and long term goals which, when met, will become a maintenance plan to keep for life. Then the thinking, planning, searching part is over. Take the time to do it right and then stick with it, modify it if necessary but stay with the plan until like brushing your teeth it will become a habit. Then you can give yourself to more important things like the call of God in your life, your family and your community.

And, for those of you that are Christians, the New Testament states that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. For those who are not Christians, you can ask Jesus into your life. Seek Him and you will find Him! There is help in God. Now, all things is not the same as everything. All things means those things that I am supposed to do. I can do them by His grace and presence in my life.

Super Foods

The term "Super Foods" is used to describe certain foods that have high quantities of important nutrients that the body needs to function at peak performance and also to support optimum aging. Some of these "Super Foods" have qualities found in no other source. Some can help cure disease or ease the effects of stress and aging.

Look at some of the recent headlines:
Experts say dozens of easy-to-find 'superfoods' can help ward off heart disease, cancer, cholesterol, and more.
By Susan Seliger WebMD Feature
Ten Superfoods for Age-Defying Beauty The benefits from eating healthy are endless. And, according to Dr. Nicholas Perricone, some foods can be eaten to help you look and age better!
Try including some of the following "super foods" into your diet. Each food contains vitamins, nutrients and/or minerals that are believed to contain special properties for health, disease prevention and/or longevity.
Excerpt from The Nibble - Definition of a Superfood
There is no government definition, but a superfood is a natural food source that is highly concentrated with a complex supply of quality nutrients. The açaí berry is considered a superfood because of its extremely high level of anthocyanins (an antioxidant), vitamins A and C and omega 6 and 9 essential fatty acids, fiber and amino acids. Others include blueberries, coffee berries, raw cacao, goji berries, green tea and pomegranate. According to a 2007 report from Datamonitor, “Superfood & Drinks: Consumer Attitudes to Nutrient Rich Products,” the superfood food and beverage market is expected to double by 2011 as consumers are paying more attention to diet and nutrition and increasingly seeking food and drinks with additional health-promoting benefits.
The United States government is banning the use of the word superfood in marketing as of 2010. While this seems to be an issue of semantics to me it is important to realize that God put certain plants, seeds, berries and other real food products on our planet to help with both preventing and curing disease. Inert, synthetic "supplements" can never be expected to produce the same effect as organically grown, raw, live whole foods. By varying the use of these "Super Foods" we can enjoy a "Super Diet" of different rich colored live food products such as:
Purple Grape
Noni Fruit
Mangosteen
Goji
Acai
Blueberry
Pomagranate
Bilberry
Barley Grass
Alfalfa
Spinach
Beet
Blue green Algae
Spirulina
Broccoli
Garlic
Cayenne
Flax Seed
Oat Bran
Wheat Sprouts
Aloe Vera
Include some of these "Super Foods" in your daily diet to be sure that you are getting nature's full support for your body. An easy way to be sure that you are getting the powerful benefits of these nutrient dense foods daily is by enjoying a Uri "Feast". The Feast is the only product on the market that provides a synergistic, all natural, nutritionally balanced combination of Nature's most beneficial whole food concentrates, including minerals, enzymes and probiotics.
The Feast is a convient all-in-one concentrated whole food supplement that delivers a full, synergistic spectrum of over 176 natural ingredients including all of the "Super Foods" listed above. Each serving contains naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, antioxident compounds, amino acids, enzymes, essential fatty acids, fiber and phytonutrients.

How important is your health?

Have you decided what your health means to you? What value do you place on your health? I've talked before about wellness being the #1 priority for quality of a long life. How important do you see the time and effort it takes to be well? Because, my friends, we really are running for our best life every minute of every day.

What terrifyingly ugly monster might you face if you don't invest in your health today? How good and productive can your latter years really be? As I have stated before we as a society are living longer than ever. Average lifespan in the United States is approximately 78 years old. That's marvelous! When my grandparents died in their 60s, it was expected. They didn't really live with the posible consequences of their lifestyle choices but, today we do. So, in our world, we could live 20-30 years suffering heart disease, cancer, lung disease, stroke, diabetes, overweight, morbid obesity, liver disease, kidney disease, and the list goes on and is fairly long. These are the chronic lifestyle diseases we can do something about. There are illnesses we have no control over developing. But the problems above can be prevented and profoundly managed by personal intervention. I know you've heard the advice; quit smoking, eat the right food in the proper portions, get some physical exercise every day, be mindful of your family, your community, and your spirit.

We are bombarded daily with advertisements solely created to sell us quick fixes, poor food, cigarettes, etc. Be smart. See these ads and bad habits as: Feeding the monster! Take your health seriously; choose to live long and well.

3John2 says, "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." John was stating how important it is and how it is God's divine will for us to prosper and be in health! Let's take the Apostle John's encouragement and receive the divine grace and wisdom to be in health and prosper!

You are what you eat, so eat well!

A stupendous insight of civilizations past has now been confirmed by today's investigative, nutritional sciences. They have shown that what was once called 'The Doctrine of Signatures' was astoundingly correct. It now contends that every whole food has a pattern that resembles a body organ or physiological function and that this pattern acts as a signal or sign as to the benefit the food provides the eater. Here is just a short list of examples of Whole Food Signatures.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye...and YES science now shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Avocados and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? .... it takes exactly 9 months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Grapefruits, Oranges, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like body cells. Today's research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

Super Green Foods

When we talk about "green foods," we’re referring to a group of foods that includes young cereal grasses like barley grass and wheat grass, as well a blue-green algae known as BGA. Nutritionally, they are close cousins to dark green leafy vegetables, but offer far greater levels of "nutrient density." In other words, an ounce of these concentrated green foods contains much more of the beneficial phytonutrients found in an ounce of green vegetables.

Young cereal grasses—especially wheat and barley grass—are distinguished by their brilliant emerald green hues. Before World War II, drug stores throughout the country, but especially in the grain-belt states of the Midwest, sold tablets of dried wheat or barley grass as a kind of primitive vitamin supplement. Today, young wheat and barley grasses are dried and powdered to make dietary supplements, or picked fresh to process in juicing machines.

Green barley juice contains 11 times the calcium in cows' milk, nearly 5 times the iron in spinach, 7 times the vitamin C in oranges, and 80 mg of vitamin B12 per hundred grams! It's a nutritional powerhouse!

OXNARD, CA, May 9, 2003 - People who regularly consume powdered organic barley grass juice supplements could be providing a boost to their cardiovascular system, according to research recently published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal, Diabetes and Metabolism (2002, Vol. 28, 107-114).

Along with helping the cardiovascular system some studies are showing that Barley Grass Juice may benefit those with ulcerated colitis as well as possibly hindering the growth of certain cancer cells.

While the taste leaves much to be desired, if you mix Uri’s “Barley Green” with another live organic juice like “The Feast”, “Beyond Berries” or even some live organic apple or carrot juice it makes the Barley Grass more palatable. I have two scoops a day and I feel great!

Start the Day the Right Way!

It is very important to get a good start to the day! It sets the tone for the rest of the day. That is why it is important to replenish your Spirit, Soul and Body each morning to prepare for the challenges and situations the new day will have for you.

For your spirit and soul I recommend prayer, scripture meditation and confession as part of every mornings activities. Time to commune with God conciously. Sometimes we may be waking up after a "bad" dream or with a phsical ailment that will cause a bad start to the day. So by communing with God we again realize that we are not slaves to our feelings or even our thoughts. We can recharge our concious mind with the Word of God. While sleeping your concious mind has been resting while your unconcious mind takes center stage. So each morning becomes a crap shoot as to how we feel when we open our eyes. Fearful thoughts, anxiety, and despair are not uncommon feelings upon waking. Prepare youself with scriptures that oppose any incapacitating feelings and that will infuse new faith to face the day with confidence in the Christ in you to help, lead and guide you through this wonderful opportunity to show forth His glory!

For your body I recommend some light exercise and a good nutritious start for the day. Your body has been resting for 8-10 hours and it needs to be replenished. I recommend 15-30 min. of stretching, calestenics and isometrics each morning to get the blood flowing, the muscles warmed up and stretched out. The importance of a good breakfast cannot be stressed enough! This is your first meal in many hours. This meal will either get your body off to a good start or set you up for a mid morning crash! I recommend a protien shake consisting of a good protein powder (there are many good ones, use what you like and can afford) mixed with a cup of good yougurt, a cup of water, 1 scoop of "THE FEAST SUPERCHARGED", 1 scoop of "BARLEY GREEN", 1 scoop of and 1 scoop of "BEYOND BERRIES" and 1 scoop of "FOOD and FIBER". A quick burst in the blender and you have a wonderful, healthy, energizing breakfast that provides a great start for your body each morning! I personally have two more shakes throughout the day and one or two small wholesome meals that include a lean protein and plenty of raw, organic vegetables and greens. Add 15-30min. of aerobic activity at a convienient time during the day for complete fitness.

While you may have to adjust your sleep schedule to accomodate some of these recommendations, the difference that you will feel and experience through out the day will more than justify going to bed and getting up an hour earlier each day. Our morning sets the tone of our day so begin it with God and take the time needed to care for yourself before the public part of your day begins.

Apendicitis

I'm back! "Where did you go", you ask? Well, I haven't been feeling well over the past two months. Abdominal pain, cold sweats, weakness and the overall blahs. Two Saturdays ago I was awakend at 5am by a sharp pain in my side followed by waves of pain like a belt around my waist. At 2pm I decided that it was better to get to the hospital after a shower and under my own steam than by ambulance so I showered (as best as I could) and got into the car with my wife on our way to Good Samaritan Hospital.
Three hours later I am finally taken in to see a doctor. After looking at me and finding JUST THE RIGHT SPOT to press on he ordered blood work and fluids. About a half hour later my Doctor said that I had a "whale" of an infection and that he was starting me on an intraveinous antibiotic as well as a cat scan, ecg and chest x-ray. I was given an IV Pain Killer and the Cat Scan showed a bad apendix.
At 10:30pm I was wheeled up to a surgical suite to meet my surgeon and the operating team that would be caring for me. My 40 minute routine laproscopic apendectomy wound up being a two hour open apendectomy as my apendix had abcessed and perforated inside of me. The Doctor said I had a massive infection.
I got home this past Monday with a 5" by 3" by 3" OPEN HOLE in my side! It has to be washed and repacked twice a day. They saay it will take 4-6 weeks for the hole to close and the wound be healed well enough to resume normal activities.
Guess I'll be blogging regularly for a while!
