Read The Label!


Some of the newer "super" juices tout their health benefits but have hidden substances used as preservatives that can actually be harmful!

I read the label of a very popular relatively new one and it used citric acid, sodium benzoate and potassium sulfate added as preservatives. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C, E300), sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate may form benzene, a known carcinogen. Professor Peter Piper of the University of Sheffield claims that sodium benzoate by itself can damage and inactivate vital parts of DNA in a cell's mitochondria. "The mitochondria consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it - as happens in a number of diseased states - then the cell starts to malfunction very seriously. And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage to this DNA - Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases, but above all the whole process of aging."

Research published in 2007 for the UK's Foods Standards Agency suggests that sodium benzoate (E211) is linked to hyperactive behaviour and decreased intelligence in children.
On September 6, 2007, the British Food Standards Agency issued revised advice on certain artificial food additives, including sodium benzoate (E211). Professor Jim Stevenson from Southampton University, and author of the report, said: "This has been a major study investigating an important area of research. The results suggest that consumption of certain mixtures of artificial food colours and sodium benzoate preservative are associated with increases in hyperactive behaviour in children.

Read the labels carefully before you eat anything. It's important to know what you're eating especially if you are encountering specific health related issues! Simply avoiding certain additives or ingredients can make big differences in how you feel! Whenever possible eat as organic and natural as possible. Negative Electron Testing


Today, it is possible to measure the presence of negative hydrogen ions in liquids with a small hand-held ORP meter. In the case of carrots, for instance, if we grind them into a juice, and measure the oxidation/reduction /potential (ORP), we find an absence of negative ions in regularly grown carrots, while organically grown varieties have a healthy amount of these. Testing also shows that raw vegetables have more negative hydrogen ions than cooked vegetables.

The ORP or Oxidative Reduction Potential can begin to describe the quantitative values of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production by describing the biological terrain of an organism. The graph that is developed determines the potential negative electron value of the system and therefore reflects the health of the body ecosystem. The x axis of the graph is the pH of the test material and the vertical y axis, with a range from plus 1200 to –1000, determines the amount of oxygen or negative electrons within a substance. Most raw organic vegetables have a negative value between –50 and –200 with a more alkaline pH. The interesting point here is that all disease happens between 0 and 800 values of the y axis within the full length of the pH. It is apparent from this that parasites and disease are killed by either high oxidation or a very low, thus high negative electron potential.

Consumers Site Nutrition as Greatest Health Concern

And why not? The single most important variable in your life is what you consume! More important than exercise. More important than education. Unless your body is functioning right you will always be at a disadvantage as it relates to reaching your full potential. The fuel you put into your body dictates how your body "runs".

A recent study by the Nutrients for Life Foundation below shows that people are realizing this important truth and seeing it as the priority that it is!

Four in five consumers are more concerned about health, nutrition, and fitness than they were a year ago, but nutrition has beat out fitness as consumers' top priority, according to a new survey of approximately 3,000 consumers by Phil Lempert, nationally renowned food industry expert and trend spotter.

"Shoppers care more than ever about the kinds of foods they buy and a growing number of consumers especially want to know where their foods came from and how they were raised or grown," said Lempert, who reports on consumer trends, food safety, and new products for NBC's Today Show. The survey, which evaluated consumers' attitudes toward selecting foods, stated 95 percent of consumers are concerned about nutrition. As a result, Lempert suggests there is a growing trend toward fresh, minimally processed foods, which points toward greater interest in fruits and vegetables."Fresh fruits and vegetables offer the good nutrient sources consumers are looking for," Lempert said. "However, we have also seen a few reports recently that produce doesn't have the same level of nutrition that it did 40 or 50 years ago.

The consumers surveyed easily recognized soil nutrients as the leading way to improve the nutrient content of foods."According to the survey 84 percent of consumers recognize that the nutrient content of produce can vary based on production practices. Additionally, 70 percent noted soil nutrients as their preferred method for improving nutrient content. Growing plants draw their nutrition from the soil. To ensure the healthiest, most nutrient dense produce, it is important that soils are replenished with key nutrients, especially nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These are naturally occurring elements that come from either organic or commercial sources. Plants need to be "fed" just like people.

Healthy soil produces healthy, nutritious fruits and vegetables. Interestingly, 55 percent of consumers said organic foods contained the best nutrient levels. However, conventional fruits and vegetables actually offer the same and sometimes enhanced nutrient profiles because it's easier to balance soil nutrition in conventional crops. Lempert said Americans are hungry for health and food information and predicts our food obsession will continue to grow. In addition to nutrition and health, Lempert suggests convenience, technology and value will be key consumer drivers in 2007.

Organic Farming in Small Spaces

NEW YORK A farmer gazes out upon a lush field of greens. The arugula, amaranth and basil, which were neatly sown days earlier, are ready for harvest. So the farmer readies a trusted harvesting tool: a pair of scissors. Farming, once the domain of tractors and sprawling acreage, has come to the kitchen windowsill in the form of micro-greens and sprouts, homegrown versions of the exotic greens found in trendier restaurants.

In recent years, micro-greens have become a darling of haute cuisine. The infant shoots of lettuces, radishes and other vegetables are luxuries fine chefs everywhere have sought to add to their dishes. Now seed and garden companies are jumping on the trend, creating kits for the home.

“They’re fun. They’re pretty. We’re very much into creative cooking,” said Mary-Anne Durkee, a food writer who grows micro-greens in her Alamo, Calif., home. Tracy Lee, the horticulture manager for Cook’s Garden, an online garden supply company, says she isn’t aware of any companies selling micro-greens supplies before 2 1/2 years ago. Cook’s Garden keeps an eye on restaurant trends and in recent years saw micro-greens adorning plates everywhere. So Lee devised a collection of seeds of edible plants such as peas, Bull’s Blood beets and spinach, for the home chef to use.

“We had enormous success,” said Lee, of the initial product. While micro-greens are a new trend, kitchen farming itself isn’t exactly new, said Steve “Sproutman” Meyerowitz, author of Sproutman’s Kitchen Garden Cookbook. Sprout farming, which is essentially the same as growing micro-greens but harvesting the plants earlier, became popular in the 1960s.
(The difference between sprouts and micro-greens is small. Sprouts grow with just a rinsing of water, and micro-greens, which are slightly more mature, must be planted.)

Easy to grow and packing a potent nutritional punch, sprouts remain popular. But it was the near collapse of the sprout-growing industry that prompted some sellers to encourage kitchen agriculture. A salmonella outbreak attributed to alfalfa sprouts in the late 1990s hamstrung the industry.

Gil Frishman, who owns Sproutpeople.com with his wife, Lori Tooker, was growing sprouts in Wisconsin when the FDA shut down all of the state’s sprout producers. Frishman says he was the only Wisconsin producer to grow sprouts organically, and the FDA’s solution — to wash seeds in a light bleach mixture — wasn’t acceptable by his standards. He and Tooker moved their business to San Francisco and began selling seeds and sprouting equipment directly to consumers.

Now, Frishman sells mostly to home growers. “There’s more business nowadays, because people just know more about diet,” said Frishman. Consumers are also concerned about where food comes from, he said, and it’s hard to grow food more locally than in the kitchen.

“It’s the only form of agriculture still growing when you’re growing it in your kitchen and bringing it to your dinner table,” Meyerowitz said. There is a peak of nutrition, he said, that comes in the early stages when the plant is growing rapidly.

Customers of sprouts and micro-greens usually fall into three categories, according to Frishman: nutrition foodies, raw food enthusiasts and gardeners. But, said Frishman, they get survivalists too; the idea of a crop that can be grown entirely at home appeals to those who foresee Armageddon on the horizon.

Koppert Cress USA is a Dutch company setting up shop in Lake Success, N.Y., with plans to market “micro-vegetables,” which seem to be just like micro-greens but come from exotic sources such as Shiso Purple and Sakura Cress. The company sells the plants alive and in their growing medium, claiming to use natural cultivation methods. For now, the company focuses sales on restaurants, but the motive is clear: with sprouts and micro-greens enticing foodies and chefs alike, they believe there is room for growth.

Lee, of Cook’s Garden, likened raising micro-greens to “bonsai vegetable gardening,” and her company is planning for more growth. Besides selling micro green supplies to independent garden centers, she says they have also sold to major retailers like Loews, Target and Home Depot. That, she said, is the real sign that micro greens are catching on.

This is a fantastic idea! I have grown produce for my own consumption for 30 years in Brooklyn and on Long Island, NY. From a small patch 3 foot by 18 foot in Brooklyn, to a "square foot garden" consisting of 8 - 4 by 4 foot squares of soil, to 8"pots. Benefits of Juicing

I have been an avid proponent of juicing for over 30 years! I remember watching Jack LaLanne on TV with my Mom. I have never cared much for all of the inconvenience, expense, time and money involved in juicing fresh organic produce but the benefits are enormous! Recently. the National Cancer Institute began a campaign to get people to do one simple thing - EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Breast cancer, cancer of the colon, esophagus, stomach, lungs, ovaries, and rectum - pick and ailment these days, it seems, and researchers somewhere are searching for chemicals in plants that will prevent them, or offer a cure. These plant chemicals, known as phytochemicals, are the cutting edge of nutritional research because they hold the keys to preventing some of our most deadly diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, as well as some of our most common, like asthma, arthritis, and allergies.

In some ways, this isn't news. The only reason that they could attribute to the lack of these diseases: differences in diet.

But these studies (more than 150 have been done in the last decade) don't really prove that it is diet that makes the health difference There are simply too many other factors that may influence health to make the studies conclusive. Is, for example, the lack of disease because of the subjects diet or, instead, is it because they live in a relatively unpolluted environment? If it is diet, which part of their diet, specifically, is making the difference?

These are the questions that led researchers at the National Cancer Institute, at the department of Agriculture, and elsewhere, to begin looking for specific substances in foods that could be providing protection against disease. In the process, they have found quite a few. A tomato, along with vitamin C, vitamin A, and several minerals, also has 10,000 other chemicals in it, most which researchers are trying to isolate, identify, and study.

The phytochemicals that researchers have uncovered are changing the way we think about food. Citrus fruits have substances that make it easier for your body to remove carcinogens, thus decreasing the chance of contracting cancer. Grapes contain a phytochemical that appears to protect each cells' DNA from damage. Similarly, a number of green vegetables contain phytochemicals that appear to offer protection against cancer-causing substances. Bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, collards, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, rutabaga, turnip greens, red beets, peppers, garlic, onions, leeks, and chives are but a few of the vegetables that appear to have cancer-preventing phytochemicals.

The problem, though, is that most of us don't eat enough fruits and vegetables to reap the benefits they offer. For example, although the National Cancer institute recommends five servings of vegetables and three of fruits each day, the truth is this: The average American eats only 1 1/2 servings of vegetables and, on average, no fruit on any given day.
Maybe the business men and women who frequent trendy juice bars, the company that delivers carrot juice, and the grocery stores that are beginning to carry fresh fruits and vegetable juices are on to something. Possibly, juicing could provide the answer to fixing our fruit and vegetable deficient diets.

Really, it isn't a new idea. If you study the traditions of most juicing programs, you discover that the vegetables being studied at various facilities around the country are often the same vegetables that have been juiced for years. Collard greens, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, rutabaga, peppers, carrots, and cabbage are not only vegetables being studied for their phytochemical content, they are also the vegetables that are most commonly juiced. Not only are researchers looking into the cancer-prevention capabilities of citrus fruits, grapes, and apples, these are also the fruits that we most often associate with fruit juicing.

All of this raises the question, what else is there in the wisdom of juice therapy that, up until now, have traditional nutritional research overlooked or ignored? Chlorophyll, a substance found exclusively in plants, has a structure similar to hemoglobin, the substance in blood that is responsible for transporting oxygen. When you eat cooked foods, whether its meal, grains, fruits, or vegetables, if the food is cooked at temperatures above 114 degrees, the enzymes have been destroyed by the heat. Since fruits and vegetables are juiced raw, the enzymes are still viable when you drink the juice. Coincidentally, many of the phytochemicals that nutritional researchers are focusing their attention on are either enzymes, or more often, they are substances that help build or activate enzymes that play essential roles in protecting cells from damage.

Also, fruit and vegetable juices are good sources of the traditional nutrients. Citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, etc.) provide healthy portions of vitamin C. Carrot juice contains large quantities of vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene. A number of green juices are a good source of vitamin E. Fruit juices are a good source of essential minerals like iron, copper, potassium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium, which are bound by the plant in a form that is most easily assimilated during digestion.

Plus, since juicing removes the indigestible fiber, these nutrients are available to the body in much larger quantities than if the piece of fruit or vegetable was eaten whole. For example, because many of the nutrients are trapped in the fiber, when you eat a raw carrot, you are only able to assimilate about 1% of the available beta carotene. When a carrot is juiced, removing the fiber, nearly 100% of the beta carotene can be assimilated.

Finally, fruits and vegetables provide one more substance that is absolutely essential for good health - water. More than 65% of most of the cells in the human body are made of water, and in some tissues, for example the brain, the cells can be made up of as much as 80% water. Water is absolutely essential for good health, yet most people don't consume enough water each day. Living Healthy to 100 and Beyond!

I read an article by Dan Buettner in the June 2008 issue of AARP. It was on Centenarians, those who live to be a hundred years old or more. It looked at where there were concentrations of people living well into their 100's.There are presently 4 "blue zones'" where people live longer than anywhere else. They are Loma Linda, California, Nicoya Penninsula, Costa Rica, Sardinia, Italy and Okinowa, Japan. It is said, for example, that Hojancha, Costa Rica has one of the healthiest, logest-livied populations on the planet. These people are not only old, their vibrant, happy and still very productive!

Dinning Out?


Never eat the rolls. If you’re going to eat carbohydrates, save it for a small more healthy dessert like fruit with whipped cream.

Always choose a low-fat protein entrée and ask to replace any starches or grains with lightly cooked extra vegetables.

While waiting for dinner, have a glass of water. Refrain from drinking while eating and immediately after eating. And eat slowly chewing and fully enjoying each bite.

If the low-fat protein you order is significantly greater than the size of your palm, take the excess home.

Stretch for Flexibility

If you're a dog or cat owner, you've probably noticed how often your pet likes to stretch. Stretching feels good, especially after lying around all day. Or, as is more often the case with humans, sitting around all day or sleeping.

But unlike our furry friends, we're not as likely to get up and stretch our bodies after long bouts of inactivity, even though our bodies would like nothing more. From sitting all day at a desk or computer, we usually move on to a seat in a car, bus, or train, and then home to more seated activity — eating, reading, watching television, paying bills, answering email.

With 60% of people over the age of 50 leading an inactive life, is there any wonder that we see more health problems related to joints and muscles that rebel by becoming stiff, sore and even painful? Aging, too, contributes to tight muscles and poor flexibility because, as we age, muscles tend to become less elastic and tissues around the joints thicken. That hampers movement. In fact, you can lose 10% of your flexibility every 10 years if you do nothing! This is really the case of "if you don't use it, you'll lose it."

The best physical activity routine is one that includes all three building blocks of fitness: flexibility and stability, endurance activities (aerobics, walking), and strength training.

Stretching helps keep your muscles loose, which improves your flexibility. Regular stretching can make you more mobile. It's like a reward that you can feel every day. There are other rewards too. Staying flexible can help you:
Improve and maintain your range of motion, which improves balance
Prevent falls
Relieve chronic pain
Reduce tension and stress
Improve circulation and concentration
Boost your energy
Improve your posture

Stretching has been promoted for years as an essential part of fitness programs to decrease the risk of injury, prevent soreness and improve performance. But what does the evidence say? Current research suggests that stretching can decrease pain and soreness after exercise. However, no evidence supports the theory that stretching immediately before exercise can prevent overuse or acute injuries.

According to the experts, what's key in the injury-prevention debate is how often you stretch. Habitual stretching that you do over a period of time, such as a yoga or stretch class, can reduce your risk of injury. But acute bouts of stretching, or stretching that you do only before and after your workouts, won't.

Keep these safety tips in mind when you stretch:
Start slowly. It will become easier to stretch with practice.
Don't force it. Overstretching can cause pain and injury. You might feel slight tension as you ease into a stretch, but it shouldn't hurt. If it does, stop.
Breathe deeply. Don't hold your breath. Breathing slowly and deeply will help you relax and make stretching easier.
Warm up. If you stretch before exercising, warm up your body for at least five minutes first, with light movement such as walking or marching in place. You should avoid stretching a cold muscle, as you can increase your risk of pulling it.

Stretch all major muscle groups, holding each stretch for at least 30 seconds. Fitness professionals recommend focusing on calf muscles, front and back thigh muscles (quadriceps and hamstrings), hip flexors, chest (pectoral) muscles, and upper back muscles. You also can stretch your neck, shoulders, wrists, and ankles.

Be careful about stretching after an injury; if you have a chronic illness, consult a doctor.
Listen to your body and do what you can. Everyone has a different level of flexibility, which is partly determined by your genes.

Here are some activities you can try to improve your flexibility. They also can build strength, balance, or both:
Yoga
Pilates
Ballet, modern dance
Tai Chi, martial arts
Swimming
Balance or stability ball

If you’re taking a class, give your body a chance to rest and repair itself by taking a day off from stretching. If you stretch as part of an exercise routine like walking or jogging, vary your stretches. For instance, hold a few (static stretching) and move on a few (dynamic stretching) – bend, reach side to side, rotate your body around, but don’t bounce.

Stretching throughout the day, rather than in one, longer time period, is perfectly okay, too. A couple of stretches in the morning after you get out of bed, in the evening when you get home from work, or at your desk at lunch or break time can re-energize mind and body.

Whether you’re trying to get active or have been active a long time, stretching will make you feel great all over!
