Patrick Swayze is Winning Battle Against Cancer

Battling Patrick Swayze is winning his fight against cancer - and plans to return to work.
The Dirty Dancing star - given just weeks to live after being diagnosed in March - hopes he will get the all-clear soon. The 55-year-old actor has been given the go ahead by doctors to start filming TV's FBI show "The Beast" later this summer in Chicago.

He said: "My treatments are working and I am winning the battle. "I am juicing every day along with other treatments and all I can say is that it's working fine and really well." Swayze had been advised to follow a diet rich in vitamins and has been consuming fresh ginger root juice every day since his diagnosis.

Benefits of Juicing

I have been an avid proponent of juicing for over 30 years! I remember watching Jack LaLanne on TV with my Mom. I have never cared much for all of the inconvenience, expense, time and money involved in juicing fresh organic produce but the benefits are enormous! I'm glad I found a way to get my juice now with no muss or fuss and for less than if I bought it daily at the store. More on that later though. Back to the why's of juicing.

WHY JUICE?

Recently. the National Cancer Institute began a campaign to get people to do one simple thing - EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Specifically, the recommendation was to eat five servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables a day, and their reasoning was simple: a diet high in fruits and vegetables may help prevent or even cure a wide range of ailments.

Breast cancer, cancer of the colon, esophagus, stomach, lungs, ovaries, and rectum - pick and ailment these days, it seems, and researchers somewhere are searching for chemicals in plants that will prevent them, or offer a cure. These plant chemicals, known as phytochemicals, are the cutting edge of nutritional research because they hold the keys to preventing some of our most deadly diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, as well as some of our most common, like asthma, arthritis, and allergies.

In some ways, this isn't news. For years, epidemiological studies that compare disease states and diet in large populations of people have already been bearing out the value of a diet high in fruits and vegetables. Such studies, which have been done in Africa, China, the Mediterranean, Russia, and elsewhere have shown that in cultures where the diet consists of fruits and vegetables, making it high in both carbohydrates and fiber, a number of diseases that afflict North Americans simply don't exist. For example, during more than 30 years of study, British researchers working in Africa didn't find a single case of such common ailments as diverticulitis, hernia, cancer of the colon, or cancer of the prostate. The only reason that they could attribute to the lack of these diseases: differences in diet.

But these studies (more than 150 have been done in the last decade) don't really prove that it is diet that makes the health difference There are simply too many other factors that may influence health to make the studies conclusive. Is, for example, the lack of disease because of the subjects diet or, instead, is it because they live in a relatively unpolluted environment? If it is diet, which part of their diet, specifically, is making the difference?

These are the questions that led researchers at the National Cancer Institute, at the department of Agriculture, and elsewhere, to begin looking for specific substances in foods that could be providing protection against disease. In the process, they have found quite a few. A tomato, along with vitamin C, vitamin A, and several minerals, also has 10,000 other chemicals in it, most which researchers are trying to isolate, identify, and study.

The phytochemicals that researchers have uncovered are changing the way we think about food. Citrus fruits have substances that make it easier for your body to remove carcinogens, thus decreasing the chance of contracting cancer. Grapes contain a phytochemical that appears to protect each cells' DNA from damage. Similarly, a number of green vegetables contain phytochemicals that appear to offer protection against cancer-causing substances. Bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, collards, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, rutabaga, turnip greens, red beets, peppers, garlic, onions, leeks, and chives are but a few of the vegetables that appear to have cancer-preventing phytochemicals.

The problem, though, is that most of us don't eat enough fruits and vegetables to reap the benefits they offer. For example, although the National Cancer institute recommends five servings of vegetables and three of fruits each day, the truth is this: The average American eats only 1 1/2 servings of vegetables and, on average, no fruit on any given day.
Maybe the business men and women who frequent trendy juice bars, the company that delivers carrot juice, and the grocery stores that are beginning to carry fresh fruits and vegetable juices are on to something. Possibly, juicing could provide the answer to fixing our fruit and vegetable deficient diets.

Really, it isn't a new idea. If you study the traditions of most juicing programs, you discover that the vegetables being studied at various facilities around the country are often the same vegetables that have been juiced for years. Collard greens, kale, kohlrabi, mustard greens, rutabaga, peppers, carrots, and cabbage are not only vegetables being studied for their phytochemical content, they are also the vegetables that are most commonly juiced. Not only are researchers looking into the cancer-prevention capabilities of citrus fruits, grapes, and apples, these are also the fruits that we most often associate with fruit juicing.

All of this raises the question, what else is there in the wisdom of juice therapy that, up until now, have traditional nutritional research overlooked or ignored? For example, juice programs often tout the value of adding chlorophyll to your daily diet. Chlorophyll, a substance found exclusively in plants, has a structure similar to hemoglobin, the substance in blood that is responsible for transporting oxygen. During the 1940s, researchers found that consuming chlorophyll enhances the body's ability to produce hemoglobin, thus improving the efficiency of oxygen transport.

Or, for another example, consider fresh juice's ability to deliver another important group of nutrients, known as enzymes. Enzymes are your body's work force. Acting as catalysts in hundreds of thousands of chemical reactions that take place throughout the body, enzymes are essential for digestion and absorption of food, for conversion of food stuffs into body tissue, and for the production of energy at the cellular level. In fact, enzymes are critical for most of the metabolic activities taking place in your body every second of every day.

Fresh juices are a tremendous source of enzymes. In fact, the "freshness" of juice is one of their key features, because enzymes are destroyed by heat. When you eat cooked foods, whether its meal, grains, fruits, or vegetables, if the food is cooked at temperatures above 114 degrees, the enzymes have been destroyed by the heat. Since fruits and vegetables are juiced raw, the enzymes are still viable when you drink the juice. Coincidentally, many of the phytochemicals that nutritional researchers are focusing their attention on are either enzymes, or more often, they are substances that help build or activate enzymes that play essential roles in protecting cells from damage.

Also, fruit and vegetable juices are good sources of the traditional nutrients. Citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, etc.) provide healthy portions of vitamin C. Carrot juice contains large quantities of vitamin A, in the form of beta carotene. A number of green juices are a good source of vitamin E. Fruit juices are a good source of essential minerals like iron, copper, potassium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium, which are bound by the plant in a form that is most easily assimilated during digestion.

Plus, since juicing removes the indigestible fiber, these nutrients are available to the body in much larger quantities than if the piece of fruit or vegetable was eaten whole. For example, because many of the nutrients are trapped in the fiber, when you eat a raw carrot, you are only able to assimilate about 1% of the available beta carotene. When a carrot is juiced, removing the fiber, nearly 100% of the beta carotene can be assimilated.

Finally, fruits and vegetables provide one more substance that is absolutely essential for good health - water. More than 65% of most of the cells in the human body are made of water, and in some tissues, for example the brain, the cells can be made up of as much as 80% water. Water is absolutely essential for good health, yet most people don't consume enough water each day. Plus, many of the fluids we do drink, coffee, tea, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and artificially flavored drinks each contain substances that require extra water for your body to eliminate. Fruit and vegetable juices are free of these unneeded substances and are full of pure, clean water.

As more and more is written about the long-term health benefits of consuming more fresh organic fruits and vegetables the popularity of juicing will continue to grow.

I started juicing with a “Vitamix” in the 70’s and went to a “Juiceman in the 90’s and love juicing’s benefits. Recently I found an incredible ready to mix "Instafresh" juice concentrate that has 30 fruits and berries, 30 super greens and vegetables, 11 nuts, seeds and sprouts all in an easy to mix, delicious, organic concentrate that has 83 Active Enzymes and Minerals and 22 Resilient Living Probiotics. It's absolutely the best raw whole food supplement on the market today. Great for people on the go! And all for just $1 per serving! Now that's juicing for the new millennium! Just read the label and get a sample like I did at Http://www.urilife.com/realfoodforlife/products.html I think you’ll love it! And yes, I still make a fresh carrot, apple, parsley juice cocktail in my home juicer and I freeze the carrot and apple pulp for fresh carrot cake!

Best Organic Whole Food Juices

URI‘s Live Whole Based InstaFreshTM Powder Drink Mixes are not only nutrient dense, but convenient to take, lifestyle friendly and TASTE GREAT!

URI takes live whole foods and fresh, raw juices (many organic), and dries them using their own unique low-temperature InstaFreshTM Drying Process. Then they combine them into easy-to-mix, great tasting, concentrated powdered drink mixes. This unique process helps maintain the nutritional integrity of the vital living nutrients and live enzymes intact.

There are NO synthetic vitamins, inorganic minerals, and no pasteurization or preservatives. All natural! URI's products are so incredible that you really have to experience them yourself! With today's fast paced lifestyles most people are eating so few fresh fruits and vegetables, and consuming mostly cooked and processed food, they are NOT getting the "LIFE" in and from their foods. They are simply just not eating the healthy diets that their bodies were intended to have.

The name 'URI' in Hebrew means, "Light". And light is what puts true "LIFE" in our foods, and ultimately, in our bodies. URI's live whole food based InstaFreshTM Juice powders "UnLeash the Life Within!"URI International has many outstanding products. Their 3 Core Products are: The Feast, The Feast SuperCharged and Beyond Berries.

The FEAST is URI's Flagship Product. It is a GREAT TASTING, power packed, nutrient dense, LIVE Whole Food Based InstaFreshTM Juice Powder Drink Mix. The Feast contains a FULL Synergistic Spectrum of fruits, berries, greens, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, minerals, enzymes and probiotics. For health conscious people seeking the best in cutting edge nutritional products -- the Feast is it.
30 Antioxidant Rich Fruits & Berries
30 Powerful Greens & Vegetables
11 Nutrient Dense Seeds, Nuts & Sprouts
83+ Active Enzymes & Fulvic Minerals
22 Strains of Resilient Living Probiotics

THE FEAST SuperCharged is the same blend of superior ingredients as The Feast with the addition of 6 naturally caffeinated Berries, Seeds & Leaves. It is an "all-natural" superior alternative and a much healthier replacement for coffee, tea and sugar or, high fructose corn syrup laden or artificially sweetened sodas and energy drinks.

BEYOND BERRIES is a supreme blend of 15 of the most nutrient dense and antioxidant rich fruits and berries from around the world. Plus the same fulvic mineral, enzyme and living resilient probiotics blend that is in the FEAST! Each serving of Beyond Berries provides more antioxidant rich fresh fruit and berry concentrates per serving than any other fruit or berry supplement on the market.

Tasting Samples:Try each one by itself. Mix a packet in 4-6 oz. of cold water. Most people like to add a few ice cubes and we highly recommend using our unique shaker cup as that gets the best results. Most people think "The Feast" and Beyond Berries simply TASTE GREAT by themselves!. And kids REALLY love them. The SuperCharged Feast has some green tea, green coffee bean, and stimulating herbs like guarana (that contain a mild amount of naturally occurring caffeine), and it is not as naturally sweet tasting as The Feast. If needed, you can add the Beyond Berries or The Feast to the SuperCharged to give it a fruitier and sweeter taste. Or simply add the SuperCharged or any of the powdered mixes to your favorite juice, smoothie, yogurt, etc.

If for any reason you do not like the taste, or you just want the ultimate in convenience, all 3 varieties are available in vegetarian capsules. There are a lot of "Green Drinks and Whole Food Formulas" on the market. But our opinion customers have discovered that "The Feast" is the best tasting and most nutrient dense Green Whole Food based Drink on the market. And when you look at the proprietary low temp InstaFreshTM processing, the quality of ingredients, the variety and quantity of the live whole food and fresh raw juice based powder concentrates in the Feast, you will be amazed that URI International has been able to create something so nutritious, taste so great, and offer it at such a low price!

Juice Fasting or Juice Feasting

There is a lot of information circulating these days about the benefits of Juice Fasting. In fact the newest term is Juice Feasting. While I am no expert on the subject, I have in times past, and again recently, done several Juice Fasts. Back in the day I used my trusty Vita Mix. Buy it, wash it, cut it up, grind it up, drink it down and clean it up. Whew....a lot of work! Quite expensive! It's almost like a part time job without the income.

Then after always being inspired by Jack Lalanne and seeing he and his wife on TV at 70+ looking fit, alert and in shape I decided to buy a Juice Master juicer. A bit easier to clean and great recipes but the same time consuming ordeal to get good fresh organic produce ready for the juicer. The pulp of the carrot juice made a slamming carrot cake by the way. And the residual of the other fruit and vegetables make for great compost!

Now I use THE FEAST by Uri International. By using THE FEAST I get the benefit of 30 of the most healthy fruits and berries, 30 Super Greens, 11 seeds, nuts and sprouts providing 80+ live active enzymes and fulvic minerals and 23 Live Pro-Biotics in each serving! I would never be able to get the variety or quality of the live whole foods in THE FEAST and all without the effort and with much less expense! I just put water in my URI shaker cup, a few ice cubes and a scoop of THE FEAST and I'm ready to go. All of the benefits of Juicing without the cost, mess and work.

If you choose to Juice Fast be aware that you will be placing your body in a detoxification mode. You will be cleaning out your organs and skin while nourishing them with the nutrients from the juice. Variety is important as is the selection of your produce. I believe it is especially important to use only organically grown produce as this is all you will be giving your body. Also it seems strange to detox using potentially toxic produce that may be laden with chemical fertilizers, accelerators and pesticides.

I use Uri's FEAST and BEYOND BERRIES daily as does my wife and several colleagues. Since doing so our energy and vitality is improved and our weight is being regulated. I can honestly feel the difference. I will be JUICE FEASTING next week and thank God for Uri International's great line of organic whole food products. 52 and feelin like 32! Try to incorporate juicing into your daily lifestyle. You'll be glad you did!

Jack Lalanne

The other night while watching TV with my wife we saw someone I hadn't seen in years. It was Jack Lalanne. I remember watching Jack with my Mom over 45 years ago! He was phenominal then and he is absolutely incredible now! He was to the exercise industry on TV what Julia Child was to the food industry back then. Pioneers! Visionarys! Gurus!

Well of course I was glued to the TV to see what Jack was up to now. The guy and his wife are in incredible health and shape! They were vibrant and filled with energy. Jack and his wife are touting the benifits of juicing fresh fruit and vegetables. You can see their juicer here:

http://www.mypowerjuicer.com/. Jack traces his juicing and healthy lifestyle back to another health guru of old, Dr. Paul Bragg.

http://www.bragg.com/ Dr. Bragg was a natural health pioneer back in the early 1900's.

This article was printed in Reader's Digest 2002 it holds what I believe the simple TIME TESTED truth about health, longevity and vitality. Check it out this excerpt:

by Margot Dougherty

Jack LaLanne, the 93-year-old father of fitness knows-maybe better than anyone else-that there’s no secret potion for health and longevity. Having experimented with all kinds of regimens over the years, he now finds himself back where he started: exercising and eating his greens-lots of them. LaLanne consumes ten raw vegetables and several fresh fruits daily and stays away from sugar, white flour and dairy. “I’m not a suckling calf,” he says. LaLanne is out of bed at 5:30 each morning when he begins his two-hour workout.“When I started, boy, all the betting was against me,” says LaLanne, sitting in the window-lined living room of his home in Morro Bay, a quiet California Oceanside community. “I was the first person to have 80-year-old guys working out with weights. In the 1930s! The doctors said, ‘You guys go to that Jack LaLanne, you won’t be able to get an erection. You older guys will get heart attacks.’ I’d be six-foot-four if they hadn’t beat me down.” LaLanne, five-foot-six, chuckles.

With a recent guest appearance on “Arliss” and a star on Hollywood Boulevard in celebration of his birthday, LaLanne is definitely having the last laugh. Not that he hasn’t changed with the times. Gone are the ballet shoes and stretch onesie. In their place is a cropped black leather jacket, navy knit pants and zebra-print sunglasses. Fresh from an hour of weights and another hour in the pool, he’s downed 40 vitamins and supplements, about six at a time. Now his trusty TV remote is by his side for the big screen that nearly touches the ceiling. “I watch Regis’s show,” LaLanne says. “He was one of my first students. I got him working out about 40 years ago. He still works out. But where Regis blew it, he didn’t go in for the nutrition thing like I do, He had that heart problem.”

Love him, hate him, laugh at him or with him, there’ no arguing that LaLanne is a legend who was decades ahead of his time. He says he’s never had a major illness. He holds Mr. America Best Chest and Best Back honors, and a Guinness world record for his 34-year stint on “the Jack LaLanne Show.” He’s written several big-selling books on fitness, has a website (www.jacklalanne.com) selling his philosophy a video, book and even T-shirt form, crisscrosses the country on the lecture circuit (earning up to $12,500 an appearance) and has a new TV ad promoting early arthritis detection.

Each month he and his wife, Elaine, 81, hit Florida to appear live on the Home Shopping Network, primarily pushing their new power juicer. “I feel so good,” LaLanne marvels. “I’m helping people to help themselves.”The son of French immigrants, LaLanne grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and was, by his account, a skinny, depressed, acne-prone weakling addicted to sugar. “I had blinding headaches and an uncontrollable temper,” he says. “I tried to kill my brother on two occasions.”

At age 15, LaLanne attended a lecture by nutritionist Paul Bragg. “My mom and I came in late, and there were no seats,” he says. “I was hoping we could just leave.” Instead Bragg pulled him onstage. “My life changed in the next few minutes,” LaLanne remembers. So ignited by Bragg’s discourse, LaLanne became a vegetarian and cut out sugar. He bulked up, transforming himself in to the school’s most unlikely football star, and began to spread the gospel of good living. His workout of choice was weightlifting, still a relative novelty. And talk about swimming against the tide: He opened his first health club (a coed gym with broadloom carpeting) in 1936- when Lucky Strikes and martinis were still considered the essential relaxation tools.LaLanne never patented his original weight machines such as the leg extension, but they’re barely distinguishable from what crowd gyms today.

On “The Jack LaLanne Show,” which debuted in 1951, he employed Happy, his white German shepherd, to encourage women to get with the program. “I’d talk right to the kids, because they were the ones watching at first,” LaLanne says. “I’d say, ‘Kids, run and get your mom, and I’ll get Happy to do a trick for you!’”Hollywood got hooked. “Some of the big starts like Betty Grable and Bette Davis used to have coffee klatches and exercise with Jack LaLanne in each other’s homes,” he says. “The papers picked this up. If the stars are with you, everyone’s with you. I lucked out.”LaLanne had indeed made the big time.

To prove the payoff of his own philosophy, LaLanne has marked his birthdays with extraordinary feats of accomplishment. At age 60, he swam from Alcatraz to Fisherman’ s Wharf, handcuffed and towing a 1000-pound boat. In the following years, he pulled off five more variations of that stunt. “Now I want to swim from Catalina to Los Angeles underwater,” he says. “It’s 26 miles. I’d change scuba tanks every two and a half hours. Elaine says she’ll divorce me.”Elaine, who has her own line of hand and body creams as well as several fitness books, enters the living room to see if Jack’s ready for lunch-five sliced fruits and four hard-boiled egg whites. He pulls her down for a kiss, and she then does a mini-arabesque, Fred-and-Ginger style. “Have I to-o-o-ld you lately that I love you?” he croons. Elaine laughs.“What’s that thing you say, air beneath your wings?” she asks.“She’s the strength beneath by muscle, “ says Jack, beaming. Married for 44 years, the couple have three grown children-Danny, a photographer; Jon, who runs a pool maintenance business; and Yvonne, a chiropractor.

LaLanne has made some concessions to the passage of time. “I’m not as strong as I was, naturally,” he admits. “When I was a Professional Mr. America, I weighed 173. Now I weigh 155. But I did that on purpose. Just like my buddy Arnold [Schwarzenegger]. He used to weight 240 and now he’s down to nearly 200. Why do you need all that muscle if you’re not competing? I still do everything I want to do: my chins, my dips, my workout, my swimming. And you’ll notice Elaine’s got a smile on her face. You slow down. But it’s gradual.”

There are no breaks in evidence. And his passion for nutrition remains undiminished. He’s outraged by the eating habits of American children. “Soda pop has nine and a half teaspoons of sugar in it, and you wonder why they’re psycho and getting failing grades,” LaLanne sputters. “You know why there are so many fat kids today? We’re exceeding the feed limit!” He pronounces the word fat with an emphasis that makes it sound like bacon hitting a hot griddle. “Remember, the food you eat today is walking and talking tomorrow,” he likes to say. Or, “Would ya get your dog up in the morning and give him a cup of coffee, a cigarette and a doughnut?”

He’s open to new workout regimens, giving two thumbs-up for TaeBo and yoga. But a certain blonde with a Thighmaster gets only his unmasked disgust. Says Clint Eastwood: “Jack knew the value of exercise and nutrition before it became fashionable.” And LaLanne is still hellbent as ever on getting his message out. “You’ve got to count calories,” he says, hitting a table with each syllable for emphasis. “Otherwise, you cannot lose weight-impossible.”Then again, “You don’t have to be a crackpot about it like me,” he adds. “Just make little changes. Instead of white bread, have whole wheat. Get more chicken, fish and turkey. Add another cup of raw vegetables and a piece of fresh fruit. Exercise 30 minutes, three or four times a week.” To date, he’s his own best advertisement. “I can’t die,” he likes to say. “It would ruin my image.”

Think about it. Two actual people doing what they have been teaching for over 78 years AND IT WORKS! You can't look at them or see their lifestyle and say it dosen't work! And what is it that they say? Plenty of raw fresh organic fruit and vegetables, plenty of fresh drinking water and a minimum of 1/2 hour of working out each day. They have a healthy marriage, incorporate faith in their daily lives, believe in altruism and live their dream of helping others unlock their fullest potential by embracing the simple principals taught by the Bragg's and others.

When it comes to fitness and health, Jack and those that have followed his advice are living proof that living a healthy and fit lifestyle is simple when you follow the basics. Their time tested approach to health and fitness is as relevant and true now as it was 100 years ago! Happy, Healthy New Year!
